Analogue TV signals were turned off in Suffolk last night. This made our old, large, reliable, 'square' shaped Sony TV basically redundant .
Visitors to Chestnutt Cottage, will no doubt be pleased to find, that the new TV receives freeview channels in addition to our former BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4. Channel 5 only. We bought it from Hughes in Southwold, who helpfully stored the TV until today's collection and installation could be arranged.

We have spent a wonderful two days in Chestnutt cottage this past weekend. We came up to work in the garden, - trimmed the shrubs till dusk, leaving tidying up till next day, then set off to Aldeburgh Cinema to see the film 'Mrs. Careys' Concert' which was being shown as part of their Documentary Festival. The whole evening was a rare treat. We watched the inspiring film and afterwards listened to the film's director,Sophie Raymond, and Emily Sun, the lead violinist of the school orchestra,' In Conversation', chaired by Diana Quick. The talk , not only added depth to our understanding about how the film was made - but THEN- to the delightof us all, Emily and then the director, Sophie Raymond played and / or sang for us. I read in the East Anglian today, the good news that this festival will be a yearly event. We look forward to next year's screenings. On Sunday the weather was perfect .Marvel at the long shadows in the above NOVEMBER photos.( Can this really be November?) Southwold was at its best - the waves white, the sky blue, the pier bustling but not too crowded, the cafe busy serving afternoon teas in the sunshine. We walked to the end, gazed out to sea. Chris checked the horizon! We felt on holiday. Southwold views - from our beach hut and looking towards the harbour and at Susie's cafe.10/22/2011 A few late October visitors enjoying the glorious sunshine on Southwold beach and Promenade on the morning of Saturday 22nd October . Some walking along the promenade, some having coffee or a bite to eat at Susie's Cafe and at least five, rejoicing in the wind, surfing speeding across the waves, giving us a grandstand view of their expert acrobatic skills..
A beautiful blue sky - a perfect sunny Autumn Day. I took some 'passers by ' photos from our hut. Here are a few to show you, just how glorious a day it was, on Wednesday 19th October 2011, on Southwold Promenade.
A weekend visit to Chestnutt cottage to do essential gardening tasks - after a cloudy start, 2 days of good weather.
We had a delicious meal on Saturday evening at The Crown in Southwold, presented to us as Adnams' Vouchers by visitors who had, a month ago, camped in our garden at home at Annesley. I chose pan fried halibut and Chris had a creamy seafood risotto- both cooked to perfection- a real treat. What a a lovely time we had introducing our grandchild to the joys of Southwold. The weather was unexpectedly perfect. The sun shone on the lagoon left by the receding tide. Children rejoicing in the warm water, made new friends, shared buckets and spades, built islands, splashed across from sand to shore. Not a cloud in the sky- a truly wonderful Southwold Day. Pictures of Southwold beach huts are in the papers today. Michael and Geraldine's help and friendship have been recognised by the above award run by Coast Magazine and sponsored by TL Risk Solutions. Try this link to see the article and photographs of Southwold with its brightly painted beach huts in The Eastern Daily Press. www.edp24.co.uk/news/southwold_beach_hut_neighbour_awar... Similar articles and photos can also be found in The Lowestoft Journal and The East Anglian Daily Times. The view from Susie's Cafe towards Michael and Geraldine's hut. During one November High Tide surge , our beach hut was damaged by the seas - tilted off its supports and the door broken. Michael braved the storm to check the huts, securing our hut to avoid further damage and phoning us at home ( 3/4 hr drive away ) to report, much to our relief, that it had been made safe. These pictures are NOT of our hut but were damaged in the same surge, demonstrating the potentially devastating power of the sea. On Wednesday last week I was phoned by Suffolk Radio. They were trying to set up a 3 way telephone broadcast between Geraldine and Michael Mcelarney and myself. Earlier in the year, I had nominated Geraldine and Michael as 'Best Beach Hut Neighbour of the Year' in a competition set up by TL Risk Solutions (Insurance for Beach Huts) and Michael and Geraldine had won! They are now officially 'Britains'Best Beach Hut Neighbours 2011' and well deserve the title. But it is not only for their help to us that I felt they deserved the title. Southwold owes much to them and the other members of the 'Painting the Railings Group' who, 3 days a week, gave their time and effort to paint the previously neglected railings that run all the way along the front of Southwold cliffs. The sparkling white railings are now a credit to the town.
In Autumn 2009 visitors to Southwold found that the toilets on Kilcock Cliff, the toilets, just at the top of the steps from the beach and very near the Lighthouse, were closed. Waveney District Council stated that the toilets would stay shut . This state of affairs could have severely damaged Southwold's reputation as a tourist town. Michael and Geraldine organised a petition and a successful publicity campaign to have the toilets reopened .I am pleased to understand that Southwold Town Council has now taken over , from Waveney, the responsibility for managing these toilets. I hope this means that this essential facility will stay OPEN. Sat.17th September 2011. lunch, in the sunshine (amazing value, pensioner's & childrens portions- £5 for the most delicious battered plaice , chips and salad) sitting outside at The Red Lion, South Green. Chat to Anne Paton ( Walberswick artist friend whose work is in the current 'Art Works' exhibition at Blackthorpe Barn. ) Walked back to the hut along Southwold Promenade admiring the magnificent, threatening, storm clouds overhead.
