Stroll along Southwold Town High Street when you stay at Chestnutt Cottage. Be tempted into the many independent shops, cafes and hotels. Among them, The Crown, The Swan, Sutherland House, Coasters, Adnams Wine Shop: Shops Black Olive, Farmhouse Bread Shop, The 2 magpies ( sourdough bread and delicious cakes), Mumfords, The Amber Shop, Denny's, Chapmans,, Joules, Serena Hall Gallery, Southwold Gallery, Buckenham House Gallery, Opticians, The Queen Street Pharmacy, The Post Office and more will welcome you and provide good service and quality goods. Accept the' Love Southwold' card we have left for you in Chestnutt Cottage and use it in any of the participating independent shops.
Sadly, you may notice some of these little shops have 'disappeared' and some chains have entered our High Street. There has been controversy about this trend and questions have been asked of our politicians regarding the whole 'business rates' system. Apparently Southwold rates and rents are as high as those in Kensington High Street, making life very difficult indeed for small, family owned premises. I will update these High street pictures soon to show the changes we see each year. You can help by using these much loved Southwold independent shops when you are on holiday here. If you would like to know more about the issue, have a chat to the owners such as 'CRAFTCO' and 'The Two Magpies'.
